Black History Month: Standing Firm in Power and Pride

October 3 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Categories:

The national theme for Black History Month 2025 is “Standing Firm in Power and Pride”. This event celebrates heritage, culture, and community, highlighting the contributions of Black people in the UK. The screening of Summer of Soul embodies this theme, resurrecting a lost piece of history that powerfully demonstrates this principle in action.

In the summer of 1969, during a time of great social turmoil following the assassinations of civil rights leaders, the Harlem Cultural Festival was a radical act of community healing and collective joy. Over 300,000 people gathered to celebrate Black identity, music, and culture freely and powerfully. The festival captured a pivotal shift in consciousness—a moment of profound self-determination as the word “Black” was reclaimed with pride.

Yet, for half a century, this monumental event was erased from the mainstream narrative, completely overshadowed by Woodstock. Professionally filmed footage was rejected by networks and languished in a basement, a potent example of systemic cultural erasure. This screening is more than a film; it is an act of historical justice. It offers a chance to bear witness to a vital cultural moment that was almost lost, celebrating a story of Black power, pride, and joy that resonates globally.
